Clare Valley, South Australia
The Clare Valley is a scenically beautiful wine growing region in South Australia, situated less than two hours from Adelaide. The region is host to more than 40 cellar doors, with the majority located less than half an hour drive from the main town of Clare.
The Clare Valley has a heritage of wine growing dating back to 1842, when the first vines were planted in the region. A 25km walking and cycling track, known as the Riesling Trail, links the towns of Clare and Auburn, where the now unused railway line winds through some of states most stunning wine countryside.
The Clare Valley is known around the world for its Rieslings, however it also boasts outstanding red wines such as the O’Dwyer Cabernet Sauvignon and many others. The quality wine produced in the Clare Valley can be attributed to the favourable soils, temperate climate and age-old winemaking traditions which have been adopted and perfected.
Varieties of grape grown in the Clare Valley include Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Shiraz, Semillion, Grenache, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Sangiovese and Chardonnay.
There is a good selection of accommodation such as hotels, motels, caravan parks and cottages offering bed and breakfast.
